Jamming can go one way or the other depending on what you decide to put into it. I have been to jams that were so disastrous it was a miracle the same group got together the following month. On the other hand, I’ve been to jams that were more fun than a human should be allowed to have this side of Jordan. Without a doubt, we get out of these jams what we decide to put into them.
In order to make your jamming experience more enjoyable, I’d like to share a short list of 10 things to keep in mind while jamming. You may have seen other lists about jamming etiquette or the 12, Jammandments, so please forgive any duplication of points.
1. Always make sure to you allow others to be heard. Jamming is about equally sharing the spotlight.
2. Try never to tune while in the midst of a song. If you need to tune, step away from the group and tune so as not to interrupt the jam.
3. If you’re an advanced player, try to stick with people in your skill set. When more advanced players pick with beginners or intermediate players, they run the risk of scaring them off. Keep in mind, however, that beginning and intermediate players usually welcome the advice and encouragement of the more advanced players.
4. If you find yourself falling out of time, try to back off and quietly regain your timing without becoming a timing stumbling block to the others.
5. Try to give everyone a chance to play whatever song(s) they would like to play. Have you ever been to a jam where one or two people continually dominate the repertoire?
6. If the jam includes food, or snacks, make sure you contribute by throwing in for food or at least money to help cover the costs.
7. If the jam is an acoustic jam, make sure to abide by the rules set down for the jam. There are plenty of other places for electric instruments.
8. If you’re taking a break from playing for a bit during the jam, do not begin conversations that might interrupt the jam.
9. Respect the rules of the building within which the jam is taking place. I once attended a jam, and some people showed up with beer. Unfortunately, the jam was being held in a local church.
10. Avoid any kind of negative, critical comments toward other musicians. The focus of a jam is to improve as a musician, learn better how to play in a group setting, and most of all to have fun. Negativism will tear people down quickly.
